Building Blocks
This page is under construction! Thanks for your interest.
For over the past 10 years, we have been fortunate to participate in the Building Blocks program. The Mission Statement for Building Blocks is: "To develop street level networks that are willing and able to work together".
Each year, a block is identified several months prior to the start of the program by the Fairmont Board of Directors
and a grant proposal is turned into the Building Blocks Board of Directors. Upon approval of the slated block, a group of Kalamazoo College
students begin door knocking in the area to solicit participation from the residents. Homeowners can participate, as well as tenants with written permission
from the property owner. The Building Blocks Fairmont supervisor and K students plan the first meeting time, which is held
at the Neighborhood Center. At the first meeting Building Blocks is explained to potential participants; including the procedures for participation,
how much money each household could potentially receive, and what commitment is expected from each resident. Participants who agree to the participation
guidelines become the decision making force for the project. Although there is support available from the K students and BB supervisor, the participants
are responsible for planning and implementing the steps necessary to make their project a success.
Please check back on this site in the next days to see additional information about Building Blocks, including details on this years project, photographs, and more.
Thanks for your interest in our neighborhood!
