OUR HISTORY
The West Douglas Neighborhood Association (now known as the Fairmont Neighborhood Association) was formed in 1979 by concerned neighborhood citizens. It became incorporated in 1980.
The highest point in Kalamazoo is found in the FAIRMONT Neighborhood and is located at the old KRPH grounds on Blakeslee and Prarie.
Our neighborhood was once home to a tuberculosis hospital.
Street cars once ran out from the center of the City to our area
The Mountain Home cemetary was established in 1849. A famous Arctic Explorer names Israels is buried there, along with many of Kalamazoo's former mayors, business persons, and founding fathers.
Douglas Avenue began as an old Native American path, later it became a planked road, then brick, and now pavement.
The building on the corner of Alamo and Douglas was the stagecoach stop for all points north.
There are many houses in our neighborhood built in the 1800's. Our neighborhood was featured in the book "Kalamazoo: Lost and Found". The book includes a photo on page 217 of a Queen Ann located within our neighborhood and interesting history about The City of Kalamazoo.
If you know of some neighborhood history which should be included on this website, please email your information to Fairmont@tds.net or call the Neighborhood Center at 344-0349. Thank you!
